6-Week, Level -1 Teacher Training Intensive, Goa, India

15 February - 27 March, 2011

(check-in and orientation 15 Feb. Training starts 16 Feb.
Final training day 26 March. Checkout 27 March)

This is the fifth Shakti Spirit Yoga Teacher Training we have held in Goa!

Yoga is about transformation and freedom. The Shakti Spirit Yoga Teacher Training is designed for practitioners who love the Hatha Yoga system, including Vinyasa Yoga, and would like to learn more about integrating their practice with Ayurveda and Yoga philosophy. The training also spends considerable time learning safe alignment in more static postures, and includes the use of 'props' where appropriate.

Once a foundation in stable alignment is established we focus on conscious movement and breath, by linking the postures together into intelligent and flowing sequences (vinyasa). We also include sequences that are not Vinyasa Flow based, but are none the less intelligent in their design. The Shakti Spirit approach is also interested in the energetic aspects of the practice, such as the flow of prana in the body, or the effects on the gunas and doshas.

We are as interested in what happens 'off the mat', as much as what happens 'on the mat'. We believe Yoga should be available for everyone, not just the super bendy. With this in mind, this course is not about training to become a contortionist, although of course we are working with the physical body, at times intensely. We are interested in working with real people, with real bodies and the real issues that they are dealing with.

This training will be held at the lovely Satsanga Retreat Centre, in Parra, Goa. The centre has a lovely, wooden floored Yoga Shala, clean and new private accommodation rooms, an Ayurvedic cook, a large pool, and a lovely atmosphere. It is designed to be a fully residential training/retreat.

This training is registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level.

Emil Wendel - Pranayama, Kriya Yoga & Philosophy- Emil was born in Switzerland and has been living in Asia since the mid-seventies, studying first Chinese Classics and Taoism in Taiwan, and then Sanskrit and Indian Thought on the Subcontinent. This early research was made possible through a six-year grant by the Department of Education of his home country. The many years of residency in Nepal and India have given Emil an exceptional insight into the depth of Indian Civilization and its underlying currents.

One of his mentors was the late Professor Saraswati Prasad Ghimire. The affiliation with him and other Pandits covered research in Hindu and Buddhist literature, as well as thought and ritual in their original context. Emil is a greatly valued member of the Shakti Spirit team. He is a beloved friend and teacher to us as well as many students around world. There is so much more to share about Emil than can be included here. Please see his website for more information: www.beyond-the-asana.com

His detailed understanding of functional anatomy is second to none (none that I’ve met anyway). He has a playful ability to make this subject interesting, relevant and interactive, as well as a wonderful knowledge of nutrition and herbal medicine. We are very happy to have him with us again this season. Chris is also the co-founder of Kinda Yoga (www.kindayoga.net), a series of Yoga DVDs aimed at children.

AIM OF LEVEL 1 TEACHER TRAINING

The aim by the end of this training, is to have the confidence and skills to become an excellent assistant teacher, and to start teaching Yoga to beginning as well as intermediate level students (please note: teaching beginners is actually the most challenging group to teach. The skills you learn on this training will be an invaluable aid towards this aim). We hope to train you in the art of 'seeing who is in front of you', and give you skills to understand how to address this particular persons needs. As well as the skills to 'think on the spot' when dealing with the situations that arise in a public class. Of course this takes time, and much of this learning happens once you get yourself out there and start teaching.

UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THIS TRAINING

This course has several unique aspects that you will not find in other programs, and is suitable for those practitioners who would eventually like to share their knowledge and inspiration with others, in the role of teacher. Whether or not participants choose to go on and teach, they will find this training provides a rare and wonderful opportuntity to delve deeply into their own nature.

  • Small select group: No more than 14 participants on this course (Note: except pranayama classes, which may have additional members).
  • Course located in Goa, India, and has the services of an Ayurvedic Chef to keep everyone well nourished.
  • A consultation with an Ayurvedic Dr is included as part of the training.
  • As the course is fully residential, trainees can focus on the training without becoming distracted or having to run around too much - although they are always free to go out and participate in the other things Goa has to offer, such as markets, restaurants, beaches etc in their spare time.
  • A rare opportunity to journey into creative Vinyasa sequences, as well as a strong focus on alignment and use of ‘props’ where helpful.
  • Strong emphasis on the practical understanding and application of Ayurveda (Yoga's sister science) – including how to apply Ayurveda to asana and pranayama. Rachel will also share some treatments and 'shat karmas' (cleansing techniques) with you that can aid your practice.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to work with highly experienced teachers.
  • Learning to teach Yoga well takes a long time and grows out of having a steady and dedicated practice of one's own. On this course, we focus on participants consolidating their individual practice, understanding themselves and others more thoroughly through the insights of Ayurveda and establishing a solid foundation in the areas of: alignment and adjustment skills, prop usage, pranayama, meditation, movement-related anatomy & physiology, Yogic philosophy and teaching skills such as voice and communication.
  • A 400+ page training manual, including hundreds of photographs has been written for the training.

CERTIFICATION

It is our intention to guide all participants through the training so that they graduate succesfully. Succesful graduates of this training program will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Shakti Spirit Yoga, stating the date and level of training you received and signed by Rachel Hull. Occasionally there may be a situation where the teachers feel that a student is not going to be ready by the end of the training to gain the full certificate. In this situation we would speak to the student by mid-way through the course, and share our concerns and any suggestions we may have of how they could 'catch up'. If, by the end of the training we still felt the student was not yet ready but had attended the full training, we would give a Certificate of Attendance (not accepted for Yoga Alliance Registration), and some homestudy and suggestions so that the student could graduate fully when they are ready.

YOGA ALLIANCE

This training is registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level, although our training runs longer, at approximately 230 hours. Upon succesfull graduation, students can, if they choose, apply for RYT-200 status with Yoga Alliance. This is at a fee determined by Yoga Alliance.
